Giving the Gift of Health for Father's Day

Want some Fathers Day gift ideas?  What do you want to give your dad for Father's Day?  Many of you might have a list consisting of lounge pants, top of the line gadgets or maybe a basket full of yummy treats.  What do I want to give my dad for Father's Day?  Good health.
You might question me, "Mother Smucker, how in the world can I give my dad good health?"  Easy.  Instead of lounge pants, why not give him some walking shoes and plan walks together.  Buy him that new gadget, maybe a sports watch?  And if you do want to give him a basket full of treats, you can give him a basket full of healthy treats!  The point is, you can totally give a person good health by promoting a healthy lifestyle and being a good example yourself.

A few months ago my dad came to me with a plea.  He was steadily gaining weight and wanted help/advice/a coach to lead him on the path to a healthier lifestyle.  I was more than enthused to help him achieve this and got on it right away.  I gave him a meal plan and workout schedule, a pretty tough work out schedule!  Some days he would call me breathless and tell me he can not finish the workout because he is "too old."  I would reply with "don't be a quitter!", "if you aren't puking yet then you are fine!"  and "don't give me that too old excuse."  He told me I was mean, maybe I was but I believed in him and I just wanted him to believe in himself.  And then one day I received a different kind of call from him... a very excited call.  He finished his workout with NO BREAKS!  I was proud of him.  He was proud of himself.  But most importantly, he gained the confidence he needed to succeed.  Because it IS possible to gain better health, no matter how old you are or how out of shape you are.  All you need is the belief in yourself and that little voice in your ear telling you, "You can do it!"

Health is the greatest possession
Contentment is the greatest treasure
Confidence is the greatest friend
And his hard work paid off:
Before

Two Weeks Later

Happy Father's Day, Dad.  I love you and I am very proud of your success.
