Kid Conversations: Talking with a 4 Year Old

My daughter is at that age where she wants to have "adult-like" conversations.  The only problem is her speech has not caught up to her thought process and she struggles a bit.  Luckily, I have the patience of a Saint (my husband would tend to disagree with this statement haha).  Here is an example of a conversation with her:

She comes to me with a serious, curious look on her face.  I can she has something on her mind and wants to have one of those "mom to daughter" conversations.
It is usually about five "Mommy?", "Mommy?", "Mom?", "Mommy?", "Mom?" until she realizes that I have answered with a "Yes?"   Why do kids do this?  Is it because they are just stalling to formulate their next thought?  Or the more likely answer, one of their ploys to drive us parents crazy.  I tend to lean toward the latter.
I can tell she is struggling with her thoughts a bit.  This must be a really deep and complex thought she is having.
No, I have no idea. ... but I keep my cool.  Continue eye contact.  Try to encourage her to get it out.

Oh no, not another "Mom"!  No worries, I got this.  I reassure her that I am indeed listening and that she can continue to concentrate on what she was going to tell me.

Yes....  Yes.... Get it out.  PLEASE, get it out!
Yes... YES... we are almost there!

Awwwwww!  OK, I know this had nothing to do with what she was originally going to tell me; I am pretty sure she had actually forgotten what she did want to tell me after the second or third "Mom."  But it doesn't matter because this was so much better...

  1. Aww, I love your pictures! Ending (or not finishing) any conversation with I love you always feels nice :)

  2. My little girl just turned 4 years old and we have conversations like this very often. Sometimes she asks questions and says things that I never thought a 4 year old would even be thinking about, it amazes me sometimes.

    1. Yes, sometimes she will say a word and I will be all like "When did you learn that word?" What a fun age this is. :)

  5. That's too funny. My son doesn't respond to 'uh huh?'. I have to say 'yes'.
