For many of you that are not familiar with my weight loss journey, let me fill you in a bit. I began my journey over 10 years ago and 175 pounds heavier. My journey began with an unsuccessful surgery, many diets, many ups and downs in weight and many weight loss programs. My weight has been and probably will always be a constant struggle of self control, fighting bad eating patterns and making healthier choices.
It has now been 10 weeks on the Nutrisystem program and I can honestly say that I have learned a great deal about my eating habits within those 10 weeks. In my 10 year struggle with losing weight, I had never figured out portion control or eating until I was satisfied. I ate until I was full, I ate until I was so full that I was uncomfortable and could barely move. That was my definition of being "satisfied." I was so wrong. When I first began the Nutrisystem program, I thought the food was TERRIFIC (It is!) but the one complaint I had was "the portions just weren't enough." I would eat my meal and not feel full, so obviously they weren't enough, right? But then it hit me, could this be the way I am suppose to be eating?
And it was this week when I really noticed the difference! You see, today is my birthday and this has been my birthday week. A full week of being taken to lunch by various friends, dinner with my husband and more dinner night outs with parents and siblings. I was proud of myself with each meal, I would skim the menu and look for the healthier choices, I would replace things like potatoes with steamed broccoli and I would eat until I was satisfied. Yes, I said SATISFIED and not full! I could also tell my stomach had shrunk, I would get satisfied very quickly and usually ended up taking over half of my meal home! My body, and most importantly, my eating habits have definitely changed thanks to the Nutrisystem program!
I was prepared for a weight gain this week, even though I made healthier choices I know that it was still over my calorie and salt count and I also indulged in a few appetizers. It is also the time of the month when I bloat, so a gain was expected and I did gain. I gained a pound and that is OK. This is a journey not a sprint, this is a lifestyle change and there will be bumps in the road but I will learn from each one. I am very happy with my success thus far and will continue to live the Nutrisystem program and enjoy life!

I am having the most difficult time with this right now! I have been very capable in the past, but don't seem to have it in me right now. :-/ Way to go!
ReplyDeleteGreat job! Portion control really is difficult in today's society. We want everything bigger. It's a hard habit to break. Keep up the great work!
ReplyDeleteYou are doing awesome. I have trouble with portion control a lot!!
ReplyDeleteSo funny... as I clicked on this post I was shoving the tenth Hershey's Kiss into my mouth! LOL You are so right... I have serious portion distortion and have to constantly work on it. Congrats on your progress!
ReplyDeleteThat is my hardest thing to conquer! If one cookie is good - 4 are better! Or so I act.... I really need to learn to be in command of food instead of the other way around!
ReplyDeleteHappy Birthday!!!
ReplyDeleteAnd I struggle with portion control really bad.
thanks! :)
DeleteHappy birthday!!
ReplyDeletethank you!!!
DeleteAwesome job!!! Super proud of you! portion control is so hard to get since the plates we get at most restaurants are HUGE... it is all a learning experience and I think you are on the right track!
ReplyDeleteIt's good to learn about the proper eating habits. You're still doing great!
ReplyDeleteHats off to you and Happy Birthday :) So glad you've learned so much during your NutriSystem journey!
ReplyDeleteI am having a horrible time right now and portion control is my #1 problem! We all have some poor eating habits.
ReplyDeleteI have a horrible time with over eating. I will go several meals without eating and then gorge.
ReplyDeleteI am always over eating. :( That's my biggest challenge. It's not because I'm hungry, just out of boredom or bad habits I guess.
ReplyDeletePortion control is one of my biggest problems! That, and desserts.
ReplyDeleteA couple of years ago when my oldest sons doctor told us he needed to lose weight, we started putting smaller portions on plates for dinner. You have to eat all of your veggies (not just meat items) and waith30 minutes to get more. You do not have to get more of course, but you can not just fill up on the meat (his big thing) and skip the veggies and then get more. It helped him a lot. He can still eat what he needs, but eats less because of doing this. Good luck through the holidays!
ReplyDeleteWOW! That is an important concept to think about. . . being satisfied doesnt have to mean "full". Thank you - Congrats on doing so well!

Eating until we're satisfied, but not bursting is so important to think about this Thanksgiving. Thanks for reminding me!
ReplyDeleteI always eat until I'm full...maybe I shouldn't.
ReplyDeletePortion control is the WORST! I remember going to eat with my granny at a restaurant and she was always so upset about the large portions, I thought she was crazy. Now I understand why (am I just crazy, too?) It's a bit rediculous and if it's there is makes it hrd to resist. I'd rather have smaller portions to begin with!
ReplyDeleteI was brought up to eat everything that is on my plate. Of course my mom followed portion sizes. Because of this, nowadays I feel uncomfortable when having dinner at friend's house and not wanting to eat what is in front of me because I am satisfied.
ReplyDeleteHappy belated birthday, by the way!
