You know I am a movie buff, especially when it comes to animated films. The kids and I try to catch them all when they first come to the theaters. So, when I was invited to an early 3D premiere of Dreamworks Home (opening today March 27th), we were there with popcorn in hand!
The story centers around an “out of place” alien named Oh (played by Jim Parsons) who is a Boov. I say Oh is an out of place alien, not only because the Boovs have just inhabited Earth (and relocated all humans to an unknown location) but he also never seems to fit in with the other Boovs. Who are the Boovs you ask? They’re 6 legged creatures who talk funny, change colors with moods and who run from their mortal enemy, who destroys every planet they inhabit. So when Oh sends a party invite to the entire Universe, mortal enemy included, his immediate arrest is called into action.
Now a fugitive, Oh goes on the run and meets up with Tip (Rihanna) who was separated from her Mother (Jennifer Lopez) during the human relocation. As you can imagine, she is NOT a Boov fan. She agrees to help him if he helps find her Mother. This takes them on an exciting journey that eventually leads into a friendship. Maybe….
The kids and I enjoyed Home, it reminded me of a modern day E.T. While it did start off slow and I was thinking, “This is going to be a loooong movie”, the plot picked up quickly and the comedy had me laughing in my seat. If you enjoy Sheldon in The Big Bang Theory, Jim Parsons seemed to channeled him for his character Oh. His quirkiness definitely brought life into the movie, especially when they stopped for a potty break! I love me some bathroom humor and hearing him check out a gas station restroom is worth the price of the ticket right there. Along with the comedy, I really enjoyed the message on friendship, family and loyalty.
