A ‘surety’ is a certainty. It is something that can always be trusted, something that one can put trust in, believe in, count on and have faith and confidence in. It is the nature of things and life that young grow old, newness eventually fades, equipment breaks down, seedlings grow mature, then die. It is the cycle of life. I look at my life and I have become my mother. What I mean is for so long it was she who was ‘Mother’ and my sister and I were ‘the kids’. Now, I am mom to my two quickly growing children and my mom is where my maw-maw used to be. And Maw-Maw is no longer the same. Love, however, is the certainty that binds us all. It is our love for each other that time and change cannot efface and the cycles of life cannot steal.

As a child Maw-Maw, my grandmother, helped raise me for a time. She was sweet and strong and vital. At that time in my life she was the center of my universe. She loved me, taught me, corrected and defended me. That woman was everything for me. She kept me safe and guided me into making right choices. Tall, blond, and beautiful, Maw-Maw always had a smile, and people flocked to her. Paw-Paw, who is deceased, used to say that all the animals and children would follow her around. Her kindness was appreciated by all who knew her. Her friendliness, laugh, and gentleness was counted upon by friends, neighbors, co-workers, grocery clerks and bank tellers and strangers. In fact, all who knew her fell in love with her. She was legendary, and I do not exaggerate.

Today, Maw-Maw suffers from Alzheimer’s disease. She is eighty-four, not as tall, feeble, going deaf, but still beautiful, kind, and always has a smile. She never complains. Until my dad was transferred to Saint Louis, this wonderful woman was my second mom and primary caregiver while my own mom worked. This summer I will be taking an extended trip to New Orleans to help care for her. She cared for me, now I am honored to care of her.

As I planned my trip, I made a list for all I thought I would need for her and headed to Sam’s Club. Sam’s Club Family Caregiving is a one-stop destination for all our caregiving needs.  Not only can members fill prescriptions but they can also find personal care items and perform free health screenings!  If you download the Digimarc Discovery app, you can scan anywhere on the package, and it will drive you to the Sam’s Club Caregiver website.

I wasn’t sure if Maw-Maw needed the Poise® Pads-Maximum Absorbency or the Depend® Fit-Flex® Underwear for Women. I figured at home Maw-Maw could use the Poise Pads which were great for protection against light bladder leakage (LBL) because it quickly locks away wetness and odor. For longer outings, she could rely on the Depend Fit-Flex Underwear, it can give her the flexibility to move and the protection she needs. Both are made to be discreet and comfortable. Both also contain new packaging that when scanned will bring members to the Sam’s Club Family Caregiving website, I mentioned earlier. And when you open the Depend packaging, it will have an inside sticker that you can use to redeem at the pharmacy for an awesome caregiver sample kit.

The Sam’s Club Family Caregiving website helped me remember other personal care and hygiene items she may need and it also helped me update my checklist for her. I added simple things as a medicine checklist and dates for prescription refills. The website was so helpful, it inspired me to create other checklist for her caregiving needs! Check out these FREE printable “Doctor Visit Checklist” and “Outings Checklist”.

The checklists are great to print out and have available to help caregivers stay organized!

Or if the one you are caring for is like my Maw-Maw and has a “special” purse/bag he or she uses for her Doctor’s visiting and/or outings, simply laminate your checklist and attach it.

These self-adhesive laminating sheets are the easiest way to laminate the checklists.

Remember when placing your printable on the laminating sheets, place word size down to avoid bubbling.

Then place the second laminating sheet on the back of the checklist and trim edges.

Attach the checklist and never again forget a necessity when heading out!
Have any tips/tricks/caregiving advice as I head to care for my loved one?  I would love to hear about them all!
