ABC’s American Housewife: Behind The Scenes Peek & Why I Relate

American Housewife is a relatable new comedy airing on ABC Tuesday night 8:30|7:30c.  When I was in LA last month, I was given the opportunity to visit the cast and watch a location shooting of the show.  If you haven’t seen the new comedy, I suggest clearing your Tuesday night because American Housewife along with the rest of the ABC Tuesday night line-up, is truly a gem!  The show stars Katy Mixon as Katie Otto, a housewife that all of us “hot mess moms” can relate to.  The rest of the American Housewife cast includes: Diedrich Bader as Greg Otto, Meg Donnelly as Taylor, Daniel DiMaggio as Oliver, Julia Butters as Anna-Kat, Carly Hughes as Angela, and Ali Wong as Doris.  Take a look at my behind the scenes visit and see why I totally fit in with this cast and comedy!

I have visited TV shows sets in the past, in fact on this trip I was on set of The Middle, but I’ve never been to a set when they are filming at a location outside their studio.  We pulled up to a church and you can smell Hollywood in the air, or maybe that was the table filled with food/snacks for the crew and cast.  Regardless, there wasn’t a doubt some sort of TV filming action was going on.  The equipment filled the sidewalks, the crew was running around and when we entered the room where the cast was filming it was, “Quiet on the set!”

The “quiet on the set” warning was no joke because not even 20 feet away sat Katy Mixon (Katie Otto, filming a scene for an upcoming Christmas episode of American Housewife.  Hence, all of the Christmas decorations in the picture!  Watching the filming of the show, I didn’t want to leave because I totally related to the premises on the story.  I TOO am a Katie Otto!  I am far from the perfect mom who shows up at school dismissal with full on make-up & fashion accessories, attends all PTA meetings with fresh baked goods and sports a “trophy wife” body.  In fact, I am the complete opposite.

I am the mom that is late for dismissal and gets the “side eye” from the teachers because it’s the second time this week.  I am the mom that doesn’t even know when the PTA meetings are and if I do have to bring baked goods to a school event, they are freshly baked from the local grocery.  As far as “trophy wife”, I am not far off from that!  I have to admit, I am too cute and will take a picture of myself at any and all opportunities. I will even snap a picture at the American Housewife set because my hair is on fleek!  I may not have the “trophy wife” body, but when I throw on a pair of spanx, I will flaunt my curves like nobody’s business!  But just like Katie Otto in the pilot of American Housewife, I would also have to explain to the husband what spanx are and why the $60 investment is totally worth it!

When the cast had a break from filming, they were sweet enough to stop by, introduce themselves and take a few pictures.  When I met Katy Mixon, it confirmed everything I had been saying all along, she is my spirit twin!  She came in with a smile that never left her face and was as sweet as she cane be.  I felt like we had been besties for years!

The rest of the cast was just as amazing!  Leslie Bibb wanted to chat with me awhile, I’m sorry if I monopolized her time too much but she went on and on about my blue hair!  Yep, a TV star totally wanted some blue hair advice from me.  However, I have a feeling we won’t see her sporting the blue in any upcoming American Housewife episodes.

And when I met Ali Wong and Carly Hughes, they both just wanted to give me a big ole hug!  Just like the show, the cast is amazing, relatable and extremely fun to be around.  If you haven’t had a chance to check out American Housewife, do it TONIGHT!  You can thank me later.

Tonight episode: All Katie wants is a good, long nap after the kids keep her up all night. But when Greg gets the flu, she doesn’t get a minute to herself. Her exhaustion reaches critical mass with a confrontation with the school’s officious crossing guard (guest star Kate Flannery, “The Office”)
