Disclaimer: I was treated to experience Radiance Float & Wellness services for review purposes. All opinions are my own.
Radiance Float + Wellness opened in the St. Louis area three weeks ago and I had the opportunity to see what all the “float therapy” hype was about!
It’s no surprise, the older I become the more my priorities in life begin to shift in drastic ways. Take for instance birthday milestones. When I celebrated my 21st birthday, it was a celebration surrounded by friends, partying and cocktails. I was single, legally allowed to drink and ready to party down! Fast forward to my next “big” birthday milestone, my 30th birthday. At this time I was married and a new mother, having just given birth to my son 2 years earlier. I was torn between still wanting that “big” birthday bash but also wanting some relaxation. So, my husband and I got a babysitter for the evening and had a night out on the town. When 40 hit, I was actually out of town to work a red carpet event in Los Angeles but all I really wanted for my 40th birthday was some “me” time. So when my husbands 40th birthday approached, self pampering and relaxation is what I planned to spoil him with. We visited the new Radiance Float + Wellness center in Brentwood Missouri and had a fabulous time but most importantly, we received some much needed relaxation.
Radiance Float + Wellness’s mission is to help you relax, energize you, play with your senses and aid in optimizing your health. Their unique services target areas you want to work on whether it be a neck or back problems or just a relaxing afternoon, which was exactly what my husband an I were looking for.
“A safe, one- to three-minute exposure to subzero temperatures, cryotherapy triggers the release of endorphins, burns 500-800 extra calories over the course of the day (after one session), enhances the production of anti-aging collagen, helps activate circulation, decreases inflammation by clearing toxins, and ultimately stimulates cellular regeneration, resulting in overall faster healing.
Cryotherapy is used by elite athletes to improve muscle and injury recovery. Celebrities use it to slow down the aging process. And, clients can benefit from pain management, weight management, and relief of stress-related conditions to improve mental wellbeing.”
I was a bit nervous as I walked into the cyrotherapy room and saw the huge liquid nitrogen tank. As you know, I am a Scientist and worked in the research field for many years. We often used liquid nitrogen to freeze tissues but I had never used it on myself! And on top of it, I am a naturally cold individual so exposing myself to freezing temps was very much out of my comfort zone. The experience was not near as “bad” as I thought it would be. Yes, it got cold but not unbearable and I was super impressed with the care I was given by the lady operating the machine. She was there the entire time, talking me through it and trying to get my mind off of the “coldness”. I was in there for 3 minutes but the time flew. It wasn’t until the last 15 seconds when I first asked how much longer I had on the timer. When it was over, I immediately felt a tingling sensation all over. This lasted for atleast 15 or so minutes. Hopefully that tingling was fat cells exiting my body, I mean, it is used for weight management afterall!
“Relax in our hydromassage lounge for a 15 minute session — a chair filled and heated with 30 gallons of water that uses water pressure for a consistent, relaxing, and effective massage. Wave-like streams of heated water travel up and down the body, allowing you to select the exact points to concentrate the massage, adjust the pressure (10 levels) and speed.
The benefits of massage are widely known and include increased blood circulation, toxin removal, inducing a state of relaxation and stress reduction, and relief from pain and muscle soreness.
In our hydromassage chair, you remain clothed and there are no massage therapists — just you and the chair. Your massage is completely under your control and customizable. And, there’s an interactive touchscreen that allows you to control the massage as well as listen to music, watch videos and surf the internet. Enjoy a massage for as few as 10 minutes, or relax in the lounge for longer.”
While I was in the Cyrotherapy room, my husband was having a hydromassage. I knew he would love this service since he constantly has back/neck issues and I am the worst at giving massages. Of course, when he exited the room he asked to get one of these chairs for our home. Ha! It was then my turn to try out the hydromassage. I could tell he was the last person using it because the power was on full blast. Luckily I was able to control the pressure and even concentration on different regions of my body to massage. The massage lasted 15 minutes but I could’ve stayed on there all afternoon!
“Using concentrated ambient oxygen and essential oils to optimize wellness with our oxygen bar, guests may experience better immunity, stress reduction, enhanced concentration, increase in energy, stamina and alertness and a reduction in the effects of hangovers, headaches and sinus issues. Sessions are available in five-minute increments up to 20 minutes.”
Although I did not have a chance to check out the Oxygen Bar, my husband did! I asked him how it was and being the man of few words, he said “It was a pleasant experience.” They have different fragrances from week to week and each fragrance targets different issues. My husband also said he would love to return to try out some different fragrances!
“Float therapy immerses you in a near-zero gravity experience at skin temperature, in an environment free of stimuli to help you escape from the stressors that your body and mind encounter on a daily basis and achieve a state of ultra-deep relaxation.
With 1000 pounds of Epsom salts keeping you afloat, and magnesium infusing your skin, our 60-minute float sessions promote better sleep, improve cognitive function, decrease inflammation and aid in pain relief. Our float rooms can also provide relief for chronic stress-related ailments, such as fibromyalgia, anxiety and depression. We recommend it to almost anyone, from athletes to military veterans with PTSD to pregnant women who are cleared by their physicians to float.”
We ended off our day at Radiance Float + Wellness with Float Therapy, of course! I was so excited to try Float Therapy because I’ve heard numerous positive stories of float experiences from friends and acquaintances. My mind and schedule is always on fast forward and I live the life of “Go-Go-Go”. I am also a bit of a workaholic and working in the social media field; I am constantly plugged into the internet! So along with my excitement of trying out Float Therapy, I also began to get a bit nervous as I entered the float therapy room and realized I will be unplugged from everything for the next hour!
The procedure is to shower before and after your float session. Curious about what to wear during your float session? I was told most people float in their “birthday suits”, so that’s what we did! This was very fitting since it was my husbands birthday gift afterall! As I entered the float tank, music was playing and the lights were a dim blue with little twinkling lights on the ceiling. One suggestion is to enter and exit the tank slowly, splashing could cause the very salty water to enter your eye and you do not want that! I was also given ear plugs to protect my inner ears when floating. After about 5 minutes in the tank, the music stopped, the lights shut off to complete darkness and I was left to float in my own thoughts. This is where the hard part came in because my mind was still in that “fast-forward”, “Go-Go-Go” thinking mode. I had to consciously make an effot to clear my mind and be in the moment or to enter that “meditation state”. I found myself reaching the meditation state a few times but I quickly snapped out of it. This is something I figure will take a few float sessions to achieve!
Another aspect of the float was finding a position where I was totally comfortable lying in. I first found myself in the position with my arms to my side but this had my neck hurting a bit for some reason. So I put my arms above my head and this felt like a more natural state to float in. The water in the float tank was so warm and soothing, and the salty water gave my skin the silkiest feeling! While in the tank I kept rubbing my stomach because I could not get over how smooth my skin felt due to the water! Another awesome fact? Although I was in the tank for an hour, my fingers and toes did NOT prune up! How crazy is that?! I didn’t realize it until the session was almost over and it hit me, I usually start to prune up after about 15 minutes soaking in a bath tub but no pruning in this water!
As luck would have it, my nose began to itch with about 10 minutes left (I am guessing) and as I scratched it I got the salt water in my eye! It didn’t burn too much but the rag and water bottle they have in the tank to help with this did not do the job, so I exited the tank to wash my eye out in the shower. As soon as I re-entered the tank, the lights and music came back to alert me to the fact I had 5 minutes left. At this time I exited the tank again and showered completely.
After the float, you can then relax in the “reflextion area” and enjoy fruit infused water or even some hot tea. I highly suggest doing this, the float therapy is such a unique body and mind experience it is beneficial to reflect on the experience to fully take it all in.
In the reflextion area, you could even journal a bit and encouraged to share your thoughts on the experience.
While I highlighted the services my husband and I received at Radiance Float + Wellness, the facility also provides many other beneficial services to accommodate your wellness needs. A couple more examples of the services are listed below:
Halotherapy (Salt Room)
“Rejuvenate yourself and your breathable organs (lungs and skin) by simply sitting and breathing in our salt room. Our 30- to 60-minute sessions in our Halotherapy room uses aerosolized pharmaceutical-grade salt to help alleviate symptoms of asthma, bronchitis, allergies, skin diseases, upper respiratory disorders, eczema, and mental lethargy, stress and depression.
When you breathe in salty ocean air or salt vapors in a salt therapy room, molecules enter the airways of your lungs to break down and release negative ions. The negative ions stimulate the linings of your airways, clearing mucous while boosting your immune response to pathogens. When the negative ions reach your bloodstream, they are said to produce biochemical reactions that boost serotonin levels. And, the airborne salt reacts with the skin to resolve a variety of skin conditions.
Keep an eye out for special events in our salt room such as yoga classes and body restructuring massages.”
“Relax in our infrared sauna to detoxify, improve circulation and cardiovascular health, reduce pain, increase your metabolic rate to jumpstart weight loss, rejuvenate your skin, and reduce stress and cortisol levels.
Here’s how it works: infrared light penetrates several inches into the body and creates heat, resulting in a whole-body hyperthermia on a cellular level to make you sweat. This invisible light heats the body, not the surrounding air, so it is more comfortable and allows you to enjoy a longer session than with traditional steam saunas.
Sweating is the best way to rid the body of toxins (drugs, pollutants, pesticides and heavy metals), which in turn improves the immune system and overall health. Sweating is also a great way to increase metabolic rate and reduce stress — it’s like a workout without the work — burning 600+ calories per session. Repeated exposure to heat from infrared light results in cumulative health benefits. And, unlike sunbathing, exposure to infrared heat therapy is safe and won’t cause the skin to burn. We recommend 30- to 40-minute sessions.”
I truly enjoyed our day at Radiance Float + Wellness and can not wait to return to test out some of their other services and get my float on once again! I am also thinking this would be a great gift to give someone who is difficult to shop for. Don’t tell my parents but they may receive a float session gift certificate in their Christmas stocking this year!
