Win Tickets to the 2018 Chicago Auto Show & Learn Why #SteelMatters

Win tickets to attend the 2018 Chicago Auto Show, being held at McCormick Convention Center February 10-19.  Learn why Steel Matters!

This won’t be my first rodeo, or should I say “auto show” in Chicago and you can bet it won’t be my last.  I had the opportunity to attend the Chicago Auto Show back in 2016 and it was not only a blast but also full of information.  In fact it was after I returned from that auto show, I shared some details on Nissan with my husband which led to purchasing a Nissan Rogue soon after.  You don’t find that strange, do you?  My input on a vehicle led to the purchase of our family car.  It is a common myth women do not have much interest or much input when purchasing a vehicle but that is exactly what it is: A Myth.  Girls love cars too and we have a huge say when it comes to purchasing vehicles!  That’s why I am partnering up with A Girls Guide to Cars, they understand the importance of having a female perspective in the car world.  I can not wait to share all of the exciting news from this years auto show.  Make sure to follow me on Facebook & Twitter using the hashtag #CAS18 & #SteelMatters.

Why Does Steel Matter?

The Steel Market Development Institute (SMDI), a business unit of the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI), increases and defends the use of steel by developing and communicating innovative materials and designs. SMDI works to differentiate steel based on its environmental performance and demonstrate steel as the highest value material in the automotive, construction and packaging markets.

In my household, it is all about safety and fuel economy when it comes to purchasing a new vehicle.  SMDI understands this need and understands the need for high performance materials,  The North American steel industry is meeting these requirements with advanced high-strength steel (AHSS) grades. The unique metallurgical properties and manufacturability of AHSS provide high value to the automotive industry in meeting increasingly stringent requirements. No other material provides the complete package – performance, value and sustainability – of steel.

Benefits of Advanced High-Strength Steel

Performance: The variety of AHSS grades allows automakers to use the right grade in the right application for exceptional occupant protection, crash energy management and durability.

Think lightweight materials to provide a desirable fuel efficient vehicle along with strength for safety and maintaining or improving structural performance.

Value: As a proven lightweighting material, steel provides the highest value by allowing automakers to maintain their existing manufacturing infrastructure.

Steel is preferred when it comes to cost to the consumer (aluminum is two to three times more expensive than steel) as well as cost of ownership (purchase price, insurance and repair are lower for steel-intensive vehicles).

Sustainability: Steel has the lowest production phase greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions compared to alternative materials making it the environmentally sound choice for automakers.

  • We look for a number of things when buying a vehicle. Gas mileage is a big factor, as is safety. Style is great, but isn’t the top factor. When my girls were little, we stuck mostly with mini vans, but I now drive a Mazda 5 (although it’s smaller than I’d really like – especially since I’m involved in animal rescue and am limited to the number of crates I can carry now).
