I attended the #AntmanAndTheWaspEvent on behalf of Disney and ABC in Los Angeles 5/23-5/25. This post is part of the required content series, all opinions and experiences are my own.
Marvel’s new television show Cloak And Dagger airs on Freeform Thursday evenings 8PM|7 CST. While in Los Angeles earlier this week, I interviewed the cast and crew of the show.
While I like to keep up on all my Marvel entertainment, I do seem to fall behind on all the television shows. No, I still have no seen Luke Cage or Jessica Jones but I swear it is on my “To Watch List”. Marvel’s new television show Cloak And Dagger, which aired on Freeform earlier this month, is one I make sure to keep up on. I had heard about the show coming out but it was my son that first approached me about watching the show together. How could I say ‘No’ to that request? You see, he will be 13 in a couple of months and hanging out with Mom is not so cool these days. I happily obliged to his request and had a little “awww” moment.
When I was invited to the #AntmanAndTheWaspEvent press junket in Los Angeles, I found out we would also be attending a screening of Cloak And Dagger and interviewing the cast and crew which included Creator/Showrunner Joe Pokaski, the Vice President of Original Programming at Marvel TV, Tom Lieber, Actress Andrea Roth (Melissa Bowen, Tandy’s mom) & Actor Miles Mussenden (Otis Johnson, Tyrones dad). When I told my son the news, he asked who I am interviewing from the show. I told I would be only interviewig Tandy’s mom and Tyrone’s dad, thinking he expected Tandy and/or Tyrone to be a part of the interview. “ONLY the mom and dad? Oh geez Mom, don’t be so Hollywood.” was his response and silence was mine. Point taken, I am extremely lucky to have this inside look into the HOT NEW Marvel show!
“Marvel’s Cloak & Dagger,” which is the story of Tandy Bowen (Olivia Holt) and Tyrone Johnson (Aubrey Joseph) – two teenagers from very different backgrounds, who find themselves burdened and awakened to newly acquired superpowers which are mysteriously linked to one another. The only constant in the their lives is danger and each other. Tandy can emit light daggers and Tyrone has the ability to control the power of darkness. They quickly learn they are better together than apart.
Cloak And Dagger Episode 5 – airs tonight on Freeform 8|7 CST
“Tandy tests out her power to get answers about the Roxxon cover-up; Tyrone focuses on being a normal teenager as the basketball state finals approach; Detective O’Reilly looks into the city’s drug problems.“
Creator Joe Pokaski Discusses The Creation Cloak And Dagger
Cloak And Dagger was the first pilot I ever wrote 5 years ago. It was written for ABC Family right before Disney bought Marvel. It sat on the shelf, and I went on to work on “Marvel’s Daredevil” to make it gritty. Once ABC Family became Freeform, Marvel and Freeform were more willing to embrace that gritty nature of Cloak And Dagger.
Why Set In New Orleans?
Something felt very Cloak and Dagger about New Orleans. I think it is our most European city. It feels like it has a history older than the country. The more we learned about it, it did a lot of our work for us. We brought on some writers that are familiar with New Orleans. The more we learned about New Orleans, the more we were surprised Cloak and Dagger weren’t there the whole time.
On The Casting
It was one of the most beautiful things that ever happened in my professional life. They read separately and we all relaxed a little. Like in an emergency these two will do OK. Gina Prince-Bythewood pulled the cemetery scene from the pilot, which [Olivia and Aubrey] hadn’t seen and said just improv this. Olivia and Aubrey just talked. Literally, it was like Spider-Man in that Avengers movie, all our hair started standing up. This is it. We were being perfectionists, but it all paid off when we found our Tandy and Tyrone.”
Miles Mussenden Talks About Fathering & Overcoming The Family Trauma
There’s some level of PTSD that is there when you have these things happen in families, and it never goes away. It’s almost like something under the rug and we struggle to deal with it head on. [Adina] works, works, works. I don’t know if I can say where we are going with it, but there is definitely something there that we need to work out.
In the show, the Johnson family loses their older son to a violent act. Miles then goes on to how the show covers real life situation which are important to discuss.
My son is 11 and goes to a party in a public park. They’re playing with toy machine guns that look very real. I had to stay, and noticed another mother of color stayed too. We need to talk about a lot of things regarding safety and being aware of your surroundings. ‘Show me your company, and I’ll tell you who you are’ is frequently heard in our house.
