Becoming a new mom can be daunting. There are so many “Do” and Don’t” articles out there, a new mom can become easily overwhelmed. From the having a home birth vs a hospital delivery, to breast fed or bottle fed, you can easily jump down the rabbit hole of parenting articles and increase your new mom anxiety. Other than learning from your own experiences, I would say taking the advice from fellow moms who have “been there & done that” is the most valuable advice you can receive.
Take myself for example, when I was pregnant with my first child I read every book on parenting you can think of and if they had a class or seminar in town to attend, I was there. One seminar I attended started speaking about the dangers of cribs and had all us pregnant moms in attendance worried to death by the end of the talk. Of course, the speaker then proceeded to sell us “the safest crib on the market” which I renamed “the most expensive crib on the market”. I won’t tell you how much I paid for said crib but looking back, I totally fell for the scare tactic sales pitch and feel a bit gulliable. At the time, I discussed the crib purchase with my cousin who was a parent to twin boys. She tried to talk me out of buying such an expensive crib but my mind was made up. Looking back, I wish I would have taken that advice. It did teach me an important lesson, which is to listen to experienced moms out there offering advice, those pieces of advice always turned out to be the most valuable.
From this experienced mom to all you new moms out there, here are my words of advice:
- Don’t let others give you that “mom guilt”.
- Don’t sweat the small stuff, pick your battles.
- Be silly, laugh often, love lots.
- Don’t compare kids.
- Just because it is more expensive (such as the first crib I purchased) does not neccesarily mean it is better. This is also true in the formula you choose.
