Review of HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL: THE MUSICAL: THE SERIES Episode 1
While in Anaheim California last weekend for the D23 Expo, I attended the High School Musical: The Musical: The Series panel, where attendees were given a sneak peek of the new Disney Plus series. Even before the High School Musical panel began, the Disney Plus panel gave us a fun musical performance which kicked off all the Disney Plus announcements. We also received the first trailer of the new series shown below.
High School Musical The Musical The Series Synopsis
The 10-episode scripted series, set as the real-life East High, where the original movie was filmed, follows a group of students as they countdown to opening night of their school’s first-ever production of “High School Musical.” With meta references and some docu-style elements, it’s a modern take on the “classic” from 15 years ago. Show-mances blossom; friendships are tested, while new ones are made; rivalries flare; songs are sung; and lives are changed forever as these young people discover the transformative power that only high school theater can provide.
Everyone I have talked to about this series first comments on the long, longggg title. The title is kind of a silly spoof to the series, it is a mockumentary series coming to Disney Plus starring a new High School Musical cast: Joshua Bassett, Olivia Rodrigo, Matt Cornett, Kate Reinders, Julia Lester, Larry Saperstein, Sofia Wylie, Dara Renee, Frankie Rodriguez, and Mark St. Cyr. Like the originals of the same name (sort of), the series is based at the East High School and includes some of the catchy originals songs we all know and love.
East High is throwing a musical, a high school musical called High School Musical and everyone is auditioning! The series has a great, fun and entertaining cast which will grab the audition and have them super stars in no time. Along with the teenagers in the series, there is also an older actress, Kate Reinders, who plays teacher and musical director Miss Jenn. The chemistry between the cast members on screen is flawless and they all seem to mesh well together.
Speaking of Chemistry a friend of mine mentioned the adult situations in the series, she is referring to the love triangle between three of the teens in the film. While I know it is not out of the oridinary for High Schoolers these days to proclaim their “love” for one another, I have a teen myself, we do not have to make it seem “OK” in these Disney shows. In all fairness, we have just seen the first episode, so this might lead to a lesson of being too young to proclaim love, so I don’t want to jump to conclusions. But it does seem a little misplaced considering this is a family-friendly Disney show.
Regardless, I think this series is going to be another Disney hit they will have under their belts. The plot is an interesting twist, I enjoy the whole “mockumentary” feel, the songs were reminiscent of the older movies and fans will not be disappointed. Plus, this is one of those shows you can watch with your kids and even enjoy it yourself! My only hope is that we get some cameos of the original cast, PLEASE GIVE US ZAC PLEASE!
