National Childhood Cancer Awareness Month: Hyundai Hope On Wheels

I’m honored to be an Ambassador with Hyundai Hope On Wheels on this post.

How I Was Touched By Childhood Cancer

Cancer.  The word itself strikes fear, anger and dread.  Many of us have been touched by cancer in some way or another.  Off the top of my head, I can name five friends & family members who’ve battled cancer and have beaten it.  However when I think of cancer, one particular case sticks out most in my mind.  A friend of mine had a son who was diagnosed with cancer at the age of 6.  Four years ago, after a 9 year battle, her son lost his life to cancer.

His death hit me hard.  HARD.  Probably due to the fact that my son was only 5 years younger than hers, I could have easily been in her shoes.  Her son exemplified the qualities of what every parent hopes for in a child.  He was extremely intelligent, had a heart of gold and just an overall good kid.  However his bright future was cut short from this ugly disease.  His life was stolen by cancer.

Pediatric cancer is the leading cause of death in children by disease in the U.S, every 36 minutes a child is diagnosed with pediatric cancer.  While 80% of kids with cancer are cured through treatment, the treatments itself are harsh and causes problems of their own.  We need to do more.  Only 4% of federal cancer research funding goes toward research to study pediatric cancer.  We need to do better.  Our children deserve a childhood, our children deserve a LIFE.

Hyundai Hope On Wheels

Hyundai Hope On Wheels is a non-profit organization commited to finding a cure for childhood cancer.  Since the organization began in 1998, it has raised and donated 160 millions dollars towards funding research for pediatric cancer in pursuit of a cure.  Every year they provide grants to eligible institutions nationwide that are pursuing innovative treatments and life-saving research to fight the disease.

With September being Childhood Cancer Awareness month, the “Hope Vehicles” will travel the nation to capture the stories of brave kids battling cancer.  They also hope to raise awareness of the disease and inspire hope for a cure.  Each event will include a signature handprint ceremony, at which the Hope Vehicle is decorated with the handprints of children across the country fighting cancer. These handprints represent the dreams, journey and hopes of kids fighting cancer.

Every Handprint Tells A Story!
