What #GivingTuesday Is All About
Through the month of November, leading up to Thanksgiving, I’ve seen “thankful” post after “thankful” post filling my Facebook feed. Thanksgivings is definitely a time to stop, reflect and give thanks to all the good in our lives. The season is more than just giving thanks for the blessings we have, it is about taking it a step further and giving back, hence the hashtag #GivingTuesday. It refers to the Tuesday after Thanksgiving and is a movement to create an international day of charitable giving at the beginning of the Christmas and holiday season.
This year I’ve partnered with T-Mobile to share our Giving Tuesday traditions. On Giving Tuesday, T-Mobile is rallying customers, fans and employees to help give up to 5 million meals to people in need through a partnership with Feeding America, the nation’s largest hunger-relief nonprofit. And because T-Mobile employees love to go the extra mile to give back to the communities they serve every day, the Un-Carrier is hosting up to 100 employee volunteer events with Feeding America-affiliated organizations across the country through the end of the year.
Our Family’s ‘Giving Back’ Traditions
I always say, the best way to “teach” children the importance of giving back is by being a charitable example for them to follow. Ever since my kids were very small, they have seen and joined in on our charitable work which includes volunteering through our church, our communitiy and organizations that “give back”. During the holiday season, we make it a point to go above and beyond as a family by choosing a charity in which we could contribute to in a special way. Last year was particularly rough as we saw close friends and family lose loved ones to cancer, so we decided to donate to Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital.
Donations To Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital
As some on who does NOT enjoy visiting the doctors office much less the hospital, I can not imagine how difficult it must be to spend the holidays in a hospital bed. So last year in an effort to spread cheer, we decided to buy & donate fun holiday leggings to the children who have to spend their holiday in the hospital. My kids really got into it, as we shopped for fun leggings, wrapped each up and brought them to the hospital to donate. Even my teenager wanted to go with us to donate the items!
My children have accompanied me to many volunteer efforts throughout the years but I’ve never seen anything like what I did when we donated to the children at the hospital. It was more than a sense of pride, it was a sense of purpose. All they talked about on the way home was what they could do next to “help” the kids. This year we are donating once again to Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital, we even have more family members joining our donation efforts!
