T-Mobile’s Magenta First Responder Plan
First Responders. We see these men and women in our lives daily yet many of us fail to acknowledge the importance of First Responders in our daily life, much less thank them for their public service. T-Mobile is thanking and honoring those individuals who have dedicated their lives to serving the public with their Magenta First Responder Plan. Learn more about this plan and below and how First Responders have impacted my family!
Truth be told, my kids never had much experience with First Responders. Of course we have always told them if an emergency ever occured to call 911 for either a Police Officer or Fireman, but luckily we they have never had to do so in their lifetime. Knock on wood. We also do not have any personal connections with First Responders, not having a family member or friend who serves the public. So really their first intimate experience with First Responders was through the D.A.R.E. program at their school.
Last year we moved to a new neighborhood and my kids started a new school. It was scary for them, especially since they were transitioning to a new school during their teen and pre-teen years. My daughter was especially having a difficult time transitioning, she missed her old school, her friends she left behind and on top of it, it was the first time she ever attended a public school (she previously went to a Catholic school). She was very quiet about these difficulties, not wanting to discuss it at all with me or my husband. We were very worried about her and then the D.A.R.E. program began at her school and everything changed.
The D.A.R.E. program I had known as a child was a program to keep kids off drugs but through the years it has evolved into more than just drugs. D.A.R.E. is a police officer-led series of classroom lessons that teaches children how to resist peer pressure and live productive drug and violence-free lives. It was also the program which really helped my daughter transition into her new school by opening up discussions of bullying, inclusion and even BEING NEW KID IN THE SCHOOL. It came at the perfect time in our lives and my once quiet daughter who didn’t want to mention school at home would now come home and talk about her D.A.R.E. officer, the lessons they learned that day and much more.
At the end of the D.A.R.E. program, everyone in the class was instructed to write an essay to their “21 year old selves” on how the D.A.R.E. program helped steer their life through the years. A winning essay was chose to be read in front on the entire school at the D.A.R.E. graduation and my daughters essay was chosen. As she read the essay one could feel how much she was struggling, how much the D.A.R.E. program meant to her and how much she appreciated everything Officer Julie taught her and her fellow classmates.
First Responders do so very much to be thanked for, they protect, they serve and they save lives. They are also the hero to look up to, the one our children can depend on when we aren’t around and in my case, the saving grace which filled my daughter with the love of learning once again. For all of the above, I salute each and every one of you.
