How To Make Hand Sanitizer At Home

If you have visited your local grocery store, department store of pharmacy the past week in search of hand sanitizer, you have probably come up empty handed.  I for one have searched for 3 days for hand sanitizer with no luck, whatsoever!  Then it hit me, I can make it at home and it really is simple to do.  I am a Biochemist by profession but you do NOT need to be a Scientist to make this simple recipe.  And it was MUCH easier to find the ingredients to make hand sanitizer than it was to find the sanitizer itself.  So check out this simple recipe: How To Make Hand Sanitizer!

How To Make Hand Sanitizer At Home

70% Isopropyl Alcohol

Aloe Vera

Optional: Essential Oils (for smelling purposes)

Add the alcohol and aloe vera together in a 3:1 ratio.  That means if you use 1 TBS of aloe vera than you want to use 3 TBS of alcohol.  I added the ingredients together in an old hand sanitizer bottle because it was easy to cap and shake once the ingredients were added.

You may notice the mixture looks a bit separated even after vigorously shaking the bottle.  So, I heated up water in the microwave and placed my bottle of hand sanitizer in the warm water.  Be sure to keep the bottle capped when doing this.

As you can tell from the picture above, after placing the bottle in warm water and vigorously shaking again, the mixture looks much more uniform.  At this time I added 5 drops of Essential oils I had to give the sanitizer a nice smell.

Isopropyl alcohol alone will of course sanitize yours hands but the problem is it will cause your skin to dry out like crazy!  This is where the aloe vera gel comes in and combats this dryness.
