The New Mutants comes to theaters across the nation today, August 28th. I had the opportunity to attend The New Mutants virtual press conference where the director/cast of the movie was interviewed. Interview attendees included Maisie Williams, Anya Taylor-Joy, Blu Hunt, Alice Braga, Charlie Heaton, Henry Zaga and Writer/Director Josh Boone. Check out these 5 fun facts I learned from attending The New Mutants cast interview.

The Movie Was Filmed On Location At An Old Psychiatric Hospital.
Henry Zaga: It was more about the smell. I think there was something really creepy about the smell that just got into your soul before you thought about it. It was spooky.
Josh Boone: There were several crew members who had weird experiences there and had to be walked to their car at night. They were scared to walk there by themselves after they’d be in the buildings all day. People definitely had weird encounters.
Maisie And Blue Had To Kiss During Their Screen Test.
Maisie Williams: I’d done a couple of screen tests before, but this the first I had to, kiss a stranger in the screen test. Pre-COVID. Well, that’s a nerve-wrecking experience.
Blu Hunt: I think I knew I got the part as soon as we kissed, you know. I was like, that was real.
Josh Boone: People ask me, what are you most excited for people to see? Yes, all the cool visual effects and the big fights at the end and all that. But, just seeing these two girls under that dome looking up, I think, is really cool to see people do in a movie. I’m excited for that stuff just as much as the easy action and the Marvel stuff.
All Back Stories Were Directly From The Comics.
Josh Boone: We used everybody’s original backstories from the comics, but we really did go out of our way to ground those stories and make them directly related to where the character was emotionally when you’re with them in the movie. The comic only goes so far, it was certainly incredibly helpful to us aesthetically and in terms of choosing shots and making it look a certain way. These comics were cool because they didn’t wear costumes in them, which we were inspired by that as well.
There Were No Reshoots.
Josh Boone: We never did reshoots, we were supposed to do reshoots. Movies do reshoots or pickups, or things like that. But, because of the merger, once it was done, it was done. So, we never went back and did reshoots. We were always using the same footage and the same material from the start of editing and all the way to the end of it.
Some Changes Were Made To Lockheed.
Josh Boone: Lockheed would be a prime example, we made Lockheed much more tied to her directly in terms of her backstory and everything. Because the way she gains this dragon in the comic, the dragon came from space. Kitty Pride got it, eventually it really became Illyana’s. It’s why we chose not to focus on a character like Magma, she comes from an ancient Roman world that still exists in the Amazon somewhere. And I was like, yeah I’m not gonna do that.
