NO EXIT Age Appropriate Parents Guide
Let’s take a look at what parents need to know before letting their kids watch Hulu’s No Exit.
Language: No Exit contains strong language, with profanity used throughout. Lookout words include: f*ck, sh*t, d*mn, g-d d*mn, and more.
Mature Content: The biggest warning for parents, other than the language, is the violent content in the film. Violent scenes include stabbings and slashings, guns and gun shots, and there is a particularly gory scene that includes a nail gun. There is a theme surrounding the human trafficking of minors, and a child is kidnapped and held captive in the film. They also consume alcohol and use drugs.
Overall Thoughts
The best part about Hulu’s No Exit is its simplicity. The film doesn’t try to do too much or be too much. Writers Andrew Barrer, Gabriel Ferrari, and Scott Frank adapted Taylor Adam’s book, taking the novel’s plot points and delivering an uncomplicated, yet suspenseful thriller that keeps the twists and turns coming every step of the way.
Havana Rose Liu, who plays the lead character Darcy in No Exit, is the film’s true driving force. Darcy’s character’s backstory strays a bit from the book, but her tough exterior and acumen throughout the movie prevail. Many may play out in their own minds the exact steps they would take if confronted with a similar dilemma, and Darcy’s response of taking a picture of the license plate and texting 911 with the details would be the appropriate retort in such a situation. Liu brings the resilience and quick wit needed to make Darcy’s character believable while also connecting emotionally with audience members, as she is also personally dealing with the health of her dying mother. Her character development and relationship with the viewers give audiences reason to root for her throughout the film.
While Liu’s performance stands out, the rest of the cast also give strong performances and aid in bringing the intensity of the moment. Dale Dickey and Dennis Haysbert play an agreeable couple with a lot of worldly experience. David Rysdahl’s performance of the odd and a bit unstable Lars gives viewers an uneasiness about him from the start, and Danny Ramirez does a terrific job of playing the young hero with a bit of arrogance in him. Each character keeps viewers guessing if they are the kidnapper, giving audiences jaw-dropping moments when more details are revealed.
No Exit does not shy away from the blood and gore, and truth be told, some scenes will have viewers covering their eyes and cringing at the vicious attacks. Some plot points may be predictable to viewers, but there are also enough shocking reveals to keep audiences intrigued throughout. Some of the dialogue in the movie can be a bit cringy at times, but it doesn’t detract much from the overall experience. Fans of gory suspense flicks will eat this up, while others may choose to wait to eat for a while after watching.
