Let’s take a look at what parents need to know before letting their kids watch Netflix’s Pieces of Her.

Language: Pieces of Her contains very strong language, with profanity used throughout. Lookout words include: f*ck, b*tch, sh*t, a**h*le, D8mn, and more.

Violence: Other than the harsh language, the other big issue in Pieces of Her is the violent content. Scenes include characters with guns, shooting, stabbings, slashings, torture by putting a plastic bag over a character’s head, and more.

Sexual Content: The series has a couple of nude scenes, one showing characters participating in sexual acts, and another showing a bare butt thrust. There is another scenes where a character is topless but has cancer and her breast was removed. The scar is shown.

Alcohol/Drugs: Characters are shown consuming alcohol and using drugs. Some of the characters are drugged without their knowledge.

Overall Thoughts

The best parts about Netflix’s Pieces of Her are the performances given by both lead actresses, Toni Collette and Bella Heathcote. Collette delivers a solid and believable performance as Laura, a protective mother with a secret past. She perfectly expresses the many layers of her character, from the tough exterior badass who can slash a throat using a knife protruding from her hand, to the more vulnerable cancer survivor with a traumatic past. The mother-daughter chemistry between Collette and Heathcote in the film is quite convincing and genuine. Together, this duo carries the film and gives sincere performances, making it easy for audiences to connect with.

Pieces of Her took a risk by slowly introducing the characters, their backstories, and events leading up to the present day at an extremely slow pace. This decision is a double-edged sword. On one hand, the mystery of the plot and characters will certainly intrigue viewers to keep returning, so they can find out exactly what the heck is going on. On the other hand, some viewers may lose interest in the show quickly, as it takes a while to begin to catch on and connect with the plot and characters involved.

The biggest flaw in Pieces of Her was the way the story dragged after the heart-pounding first episode. The series contains eight episodes, with each episode running around an hour long, and truthfully, this series could’ve easily been made into a movie. Audiences will stay invested due to the “mystery” of the plot, but it will be a brute force attempt through some of the episodes. And while the show starts off with highly intense, suspenseful events, the ending is a bit of a letdown and somewhat anti-climactic. In the final episode, right after the big payoff is revealed, it continues to meander along at a plodding pace, attempting to shore up any loose ends for twenty plus minutes of dull drama.

Despite its flaws, Pieces of Her is an enjoyable thrill ride that will keep the twists and turns coming until the very end. Along with the crime and drama of the series, there is also a sweet mother-daughter relationship that the filmmakers explore and that will resonate with many viewers. This should be an easy one to add to your queue if you love this type of show, but it might take a bit longer to finish it than some of the others due to the aforementioned pacing issues. However, some viewers may not want to put it down after seeing the amazing performances by the series’ leads.
