The story is not only heartwarming, as it is based on the life of a father who is a bounty hunter and works far too much, missing out on much of his children’s lives, but it is also very funny. The series manages to take familiar elements and make them new, while also introducing some fantastic new characters filled with robots and aliens. It is the type of show that will appeal to all generations of viewers across the board, be they male or female.
Netflix’s My Dad The Bounty Hunter has a phenomenal cast that really brings their characters to life. Priah Ferguson (The Curse of Bridge Hollow) voices Lisa, the older sibling and the more sassier of the two, while her younger brother Sean is voiced by Jecobi Swain (Firebuds). While both kids have a devout love for their father, they each show it in different ways. Lisa, the teenager, is more standoffish with a chip on her shoulder, compared to Sean, who is more fragile and forgiving. The rest of the cast does a terrific job, meshing well together with a very natural and authentic feel. Yvette Nicole Brown (Disenchanted), who voices KRS, is a standout, having her voice changed by Lisa and bringing some hilarious moments to the show.
My Dad The Bounty Hunter obviously doesn’t have a huge budget behind it, and the animation will not win any awards, but it is colorful and has enough moving parts to keep all eyes on the screen. The lack of high-budget animation is totally made up for by the amazing world-building and fun characters created. Some of the designs and characters range from totally adorable to extremely weird, and the kids will lap it up. Hopefully, Netflix will enter this new world with some sure-to-be-popular action figures and plushies. The messages will hit with most, as it not only delves into a complicated family-work-life balance but also touches on some themes of fighting capitalism and the evil that arises from those in power.
All in all, Netflix’s My Dad The Bounty Hunter is a joy to watch, and viewers will breeze through the 10 episodes in season one. In fact, the audience’s main complaint may be that the series is too short, with each episode lasting around 20 minutes and the final episode appearing rushed. The last episode alone could have easily added a few episodes to the series. In any case, viewers will enjoy this animated science fiction world and beg for a season 2.
