Overall Thoughts
There has been a revival of movies and series as of late that surround the stories of famous serial killers. Most recently, Netflix released Dahmer, which shocked and disgusted audiences, but like onlookers passing by a car crash, viewers could not not watch it. Hulu’s Boston Strangler 2023 takes a tamer look at the captivating murder mystery and the two female journalists who tell the truth surrounding the murders.
Hulu’s Boston Strangler 2023 stars Keira Knightley, who plays journalist Loretta McLaughlin, and Carrie Coon as her partner, Jean Cole. McLaughlin was the first to break the story that the killings were actually done by one person, a serial killer, later teaming up with Cole. The two women are great together onscreen and exude a strength and confidence that are needed for such roles, where the two literally had their lives in danger to seek out and reveal the truth.
For those looking for a serial killer film that delves into the killer and the details of the murders, Hulu’s Boston Strangler 2023 is not it. Instead, this film follows the two female journalists and the hoops they had to jump through while investigating the story, the ineptness of the police surrounding the case, and of course, the details of the possible killers themselves. Writer and director Matt Ruskin can be commended for his decision to not delve too deep into the murders, the victims, and the grisly details, usually choosing to have the murders shown offscreen and only sounds of the attacks being heard. In some ways, not showing these murders but rather the attacks of the victim’s screams made those crimes feel much more intense and heartbreaking.
Hulu’s Boston Strangler 2023 is slow paced, which could easily lose some viewers who are looking for more action than a story-telling film. However, for those who may not know of the murders and for those who may be familiar with the murders but unaware of the journalist who aided in the investigation, it is an intriguing part of history that this movie showcases. This film won’t win any awards or be of interest to everyone, but the work Loretta McLaughlin and Jean Cole put into the Boston Strangler case deserves much praise and their story deserves to be told.
