Overall Thoughts

The Super Mario Bros. Movie will win the hearts of fans of the video games, bringing back all the nostalgia from the game and its iconic characters. Expect to see plenty of Easter eggs as Mario and Luigi enter the gaming world, including where the mushroom people and jungle people live. The animation really brings the worlds to life with its vibrant colors that pop, giving it a video game feel.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie has a solid ensemble cast, all of whom give genuine and believable performances and bring the personality needed for their characters. When the trailer hit, there was much controversy over the fact that Chris Pratt, who voices Mario, doesn’t really sound like Mario but rather uses his own voice for the role. Watching the film, this was never really a problem or distraction for the role of Mario or any of the other characters. Although the movie is very aware of itself and, in fact, addresses the “voice” early on, even giving Pratt a chance to delight viewers with his version of Mario.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie runs around 90 minutes, which is the perfect length for this type of film geared towards a younger audience. It packs tons of actions and silly jokes to make the time fly by; there was never a dull moment. While the plot leaves much to be desired and was extremely predictable, it really didn’t bog down the story at all. Along with the content of the film being extremely family-friendly—no curse words or overly mature themes—it makes for the perfect film to enjoy with the entire family.
