Eve Hewson gives a breakout performance as Flora, a down-to-earth and fiercely protective mother who is struggling to keep her son Max, played by Orén Kinlan, on the straight and narrow. When Max is caught getting into trouble with the law, Flora decides to sign him up for guitar lessons with Jeff (Joseph Gordon-Levitt), a washed-up American musician who lives in Los Angeles but giving guitar lessons via Zoom.
At first, Max is resistant to the idea, but he soon begins to discover his passion for music. With Jeff’s guidance, Max and Flora begin to write and perform songs together, and their bond as mother and son grows stronger.
John Carney is a master of the musical genre, and Flora and Son is full of catchy original songs and moving performances. Carney’s films also explores themes of family, love, and second chances with warmth and humor.
