Overall Thoughts
Mark Wahlberg straps on the dad-bod and assassin skills in Apple TV+’s newest action comedy, The Family Plan. The film follows Dan Morgan (Wahlberg), a former government top assassin living incognito in a seemingly idyllic suburban life with his wife and kids. But his past catches up when assassins come knocking, forcing Dan to reveal his deadly secrets to his unsuspecting family and drag them on a cross-country escape.
AppleTV+’s The Family Plan delivers on the action front. Wahlberg throws himself into the fight scenes as the former top assassin with gusto, executing slick takedowns and acrobatic maneuvers that wouldn’t be out of place in a John Wick film. The car chases are thrilling, and the shootouts are well-choreographed, keeping the adrenaline pumping throughout.
Wahlberg is also in his comfort zone here, effortlessly switching between the bumbling dad and the ruthless killer. His charisma shines through, making Dan a character you can’t help but root for, even as he’s wreaking havoc.
The film aims for laughs alongside the action, with mixed results. Some of the jokes land well, particularly those arising from the absurdity of a suburban dad suddenly thrust back into his assassin life. However, other attempts at humor fall flat, feeling forced or relying on tired stereotypes.
The story itself doesn’t break new ground. It follows a familiar formula of a hidden past coming back to haunt, with predictable twists and turns. The film takes its time getting to the action, and some might find the pacing uneven, especially during the slower stretches of family drama.
AppleTV+ The Family Plan is a popcorn flick at its core, offering exciting action sequences and Wahlberg’s undeniable charm. However, its predictable plot, uneven pacing, and underdeveloped supporting characters hold it back from reaching its full potential. If you’re looking for a lighthearted and entertaining escape, The Family Plan might just hit the spot. But for those seeking a more complex and nuanced story, you might be left wanting more.
