Overall Thoughts
Cracking open another chapter in the Ghostbusters saga, “Frozen Empire” delivers a mix of thrills, chills, and a whole lot of familiar faces. Unlike its predecessor, Ghostbusters: Afterlife, Frozen Empire leans more into the comedy and fun aspects of the franchise, reminiscent of the original films.
The new Ghostbusters—Phoebe, Gary, Callie, and Trevor—are a charismatic bunch. Their banter and teamwork are a highlight, bringing fresh energy to the franchise. And this time around, the original Ghostbusters (minus the irreplaceable Harold Ramis) feel more like genuine contributors to the story, not just nostalgia bait.
Not everything is perfect in Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire; the plot struggles to juggle introducing a new threat, integrating the old guard, and showering audiences with fan service references. This contributes to the slow pace at the start of the film and leaves the movie feeling cluttered and lacking focus throughout. While a sprinkle of nostalgia is nice, some may find Frozen Empire relies a bit too heavily on callbacks to the original films.
Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire boasts impressive special effects, especially when it comes to the chilling main villain. However, the high-octane opening sets a bar the movie doesn’t quite maintain throughout, with the energy dipping at times.
If you’re a die-hard Ghostbusters fan with a soft spot for proton packs and witty banter, Frozen Empire offers a fun, albeit familiar, adventure. However, if you’re looking for a groundbreaking story or a perfectly balanced narrative, this sequel might leave you feeling a little less than satisfied.
