Overall Thoughts
The best part about The Fall Guy 2024 is the dynamic duo, Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt. The two are a winning team, bringing charisma and wit to their roles as a stuntman and an aspiring film director. Gosling brings his signature charm to Colt, the weathered stuntman with a good heart. He portrays the physical demands of the role convincingly, but also injects humor and vulnerability into Colt’s struggles with Hollywood and his past. While Gosling relies on stunt performers for the most dangerous scenes, he reportedly did a significant amount of his own stunt work, which adds to the film’s authenticity.
Blunt plays Jody, Colt’s ex-girlfriend who’s become a disillusioned director. She portrays the character’s ambition and drive, but also her frustration with the Hollywood machine, illiciting the tension directors face when trying to command a film and the pending deadlines and budget restrictions they face. The pair volley back and forth their feelings from a prior relationship/fling they had throughout the movie, offering heartfelt quips and candid accusations much to the delight of the audience amidst all the action shots and retakes on the set.
The Fall Guy strikes a great balance between high action, comedy, romance, a varied rocking soundtrack, and just overall feel good performances. It never takes itself too seriously, keeping everything light and fun the whole way through making its slightly over two hour runtime breeze on by. You needn’t be familiar with the TV show to enjoy this movie, but fans of the original should know it isn’t quite the same premise, at least not at this time. If it is as successful as it appears it will be, I wouldn’t rule out a sequel in a couple more years.
