Overall Thoughts

The Summer I Turned Pretty Season 2 is a worthy follow-up to the first season, deepening the characters and relationships, while also delivering plenty of heart-pounding romance and beachy escapism. The season picks up with Belly (Lola Tung) returning to Cousins Beach for another summer with her family and the Fishers. But this summer is different. Susannah (Rachel Blanchard) is battling cancer, and Conrad (Christopher Briney) is withdrawn and distant. Belly is torn between her feelings for Conrad and Jeremiah (Gavin Casalegno), and she’s also struggling to find her place in the world.

The show does a great job of balancing light and dark. There are plenty of sweet and funny moments, but there’s also plenty of heartbreak and angst. The characters are all well-developed and relatable, and the relationships feel real and authentic. The romance this year is complicated, and when you mix that with the death of Susannah (Rachel Blanchard), which finished last season with her promising to enter a trial for treatment of her cancer and everyone feeling hopeful, this season starts off with a heavy blow. There are themes of dealing with grief and loss, in more ways than one, as the future of their loved Cousins Beach house is threatened to be sold.

The Summer I Turned Pretty season 2 doesn’t truly come alive (no pun intended) until the end of episode 2, which has the gang returning to Cousins Beach. Not only are the beach scenes absolutely gorgeous, and the cinematography is top-notch, but that is also when the drama unfolds as they return to discover the house has been put up for sale by their Aunt Julia (Kyra Sedgwick). Aunt Julia is accompanied by her daughter Skye (Elsie Fisher), whose addition to the group is welcomed as she helps to try to save the place.

While this season is hands-down the best yet, it doesn’t come without its flaws. The pacing felt a bit slow at times, and the plot could have been tightened up. And while the love triangle between Belly, Conrad, and Jeremiah continued through season 2, the ending was a bit anticlimactic, and I was left wanting more.

All in all, The Summer I Turned Pretty season 2 was an enjoyable watch that not only met the expectations of season 1, but exceeded them. It’s a heartwarming, romantic, and coming-of-age story that will stay with you long after you’ve finished watching. I would definitely recommend it to fans of the first season as well as fans of YA romance and beachy escapism.
