Sweet Tooth Parents Guide Review

In Netflix’s Sweet Tooth a virus has swept the lands killing many humans, at the same time this was happening all babies born were hybrids made up of half human and half animal. No one knows which came first but many blame the virus on the new hybrids and a group are set to destroy them. A young deer-human hybrid named Gus (Christian Convery) has lived in isolation with his ‘Pubba’ before he is eventually taken by the virus, leaving Gus alone. Gus meets a loner named Jepperd (Nonso Anozie). who he calls Big Man and the two form an unlikely friendship and set out together to find Birdie, who is thought to be Gus’ mother. While this is going on, Doctor Singh’s (Adeel Akhtar) wife (Aliza Vellani) is one of the only survivors of the virus, thanks to her husband, and he remains doing whatever he can to keep her alive.

Sweet Tooth Age Appropriate Parents Guide

Lets take a look at what parents need to know before letting their kids watch Netflix’s Sweet Tooth.

Language: Sweet Tooth contains mild language with some profanity used, words including: sh*t, a**h*le, damn and hell.

Mature Content: The series is about a post apocalyptic time where a virus is running rampant, killing humans and the rise of animal/human hybrids. There are violent scenes where characters fight each other, kill one another, and there is even one scene in which a man suspected of having the virus is burned alive.

Overall Thoughts

Watching a series that centers around a pandemic virus which has thrown the world and humanity into disarray hits a little too close to home. In fact, it may lead some to assume Netflix’s Sweet Tooth was written during the 2020 pandemic lockdown but in fact, the comic book series was first written in 2009 and began adaptation into a live-action series in 2019. Yet it is the concept of how humans deal with the after effects of a deadly virus which resonate most with viewers.

Convery and Anozie, who played Gus and Jepp in Sweet Tooth, have great chemistry together on screen and in fact, it is their friendship which truly brings this series above and beyond. Anozie not only looks the part of ‘Big Man’ but it is his geniuneness and soft heart which radiates through the tough exterior that adds to the perfection of his character. And on Gus’ part, Convery delivers the naivete along with his strong convictions to give a believable deer-human hybrid that everyone will just fall in love with.

As far as visually speaking, Sweet Tooth takes us on an adventure over beautiful landscapes viewers have truly missed seeing over the past quarantined year. If anything, this series will have viewers craving to get out of the house and appreciate the glories in nature. When it comes to a series of hybrid animal-human characters, the CGI effects need to be on point. Admittedly, there were times where the CGI looked a little childish. However, I could stare at the way Gus’ ears move to his every emotion for days.

Where Sweet Tooth exceeds is in the message it delivers. That when it comes to the differences among us, if we are facing a common goal, there is nothing that can stand in our way.  It may not always be an easy road to travel, and sure there will be obstacles, but there is infintitely more power in unity than in division.
