The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special Age Appropriate Parents Guide
Let’s take a look at what parents need to know before letting their kids watch The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special.
Language: The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special contains some strong language, with profanity used. Lookout words include: sh*t, d*mn, cr*p, and phrases like “stupid” and “piss off.”
Mature Content: The biggest concern for parents in the new holiday special, other than the language, is the violent content. Characters are shown in hand-to-hand combat with police officers; police shoot their guns at intruders; a police car is flipped upside down; and there is a beating on a man in a costume. There is a break-in and kidnapping, and characters are shown consuming alcohol and getting drunk in a bar.
Overall Thoughts
The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special is proof that what James Gunn touches often turns to gold. There is no denying that phase four of the Marvel Cinematic Universe is a bit disjointed, as it is one of the first phases to encumber both streaming series and films to hit the big screen, often resulting in a muddled timeline and storyline. The beauty of this new special is that Gunn was not constrained by the larger story and was able to focus on some of his favorite heroes, the Guardians of the Galaxy, and especially on two of the team’s funniest duos, Drax and Mantis. The result is pure entertainment and felt much like Gunn’s original Guardians film, where viewers were introduced to the heroes and their interactions with one another without weaving in other Marvel characters or MCU plots.
The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special mixes a touch of animation with live action and features Kevin Bacon, who is sought after as a birthday gift to cheer up Quill for Christmas. Who doesn’t love Kevin Bacon? He basically brought the people of a town together through dance (per Mantis) and will surely cheer up Quill. The choice to add him to this holiday special was brilliant and totally a Guardians thing to do, as it brought an abundance of laughs and zaniness. And it is clear that Bacon is having a ball in the special, playing himself well, shining onscreen, and meshing well with the chemistry between Drax and Mantis.
At the heart of The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special is a sweet story that will tug at the heartstrings. The majority of Marvel fans feel Quill’s pain going through a holiday while missing a loved one who has passed away, and Gamora’s death was a hard one for all Marvel fans, not just Peter. The thing that gets many of us mourning losses on these special days are the loved ones that are still around us, and this is true even for a hero like Quill. This special is not only a reminder of our loved ones during the holiday season, but also a reminder of the humor, heart, and friendship the Guardians possess and why we adore them so much.
